Each edition will be bound in a fabric from one of six designers in the book and comes in a plexiglass box. The time-honored "Paisley" was Veronica Etro's pick for the "Etro Edition", limited to just 2,000 copies. From Azzedine Alaia, Cristobal Balenciaga, and Coco Chanel, to Alexander McQueen, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood, the greatest fashion designers of the 20th and 21st centuries are featured in the permanent collection of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology. The curators of America's premier fashion museum have selected 500 masterpieces of the art of fashion, providing a visual guide to the history of fashion. Known for its innovative and award-winning exhibitions and its outstanding permanent collection of more than 50,000 garments and accessories, The Museum at FIT in New York City is one of only a handful of museums in the world devoted to the art of fashion. The Museum has built its collection around aesthetically and historically significant "directional" fashion-the kind of clothing and accessories that move fashion forward. The designers are organized from A-Z: Adrian, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior...through Xuly Bet, Yamamoto, and Zoran. Photographs of selected garments from the Museum's permanent collection illuminate each of the featured designers, while curatorial texts explain why each designer is important in fashion history and what is special about the individual pieces featured. In addition to showcasing 100 of the most important designers of the last century with essays by the curators at FIT and a foreword by Suzy Menkes, this book also explores how a fashion museum goes about collecting and exhibiting fashion. In her introductory essay, director and chief curator Valerie Steele writes about the rise of the fashion museum, and the emergence of the fashion exhibition as a popular and controversial phenomenon. "Paisley": it's practically synonymous with the Etro name, and the five "Paisley" motifs selected by Veronica Etro for this edition are no exception. For decades the company has explored and reinterpreted the classic droplet-shaped vegetable decoration, rich in history and meanings, through experimentation and technology, drawing from the past into the present with timeless international style. Six designers - Akris, Etro, Stella McCartney, Missoni, Prada, and Diane von Furstenberg - have contributed fabrics - bold, iconic, revolutionary - to cover 1,000 to 2,000 books each, for a total first printing of 11,000 copies. Crafted by hand at a bindery in the heart of Italy, and stamped with a unique number, every copy is an instant classic, and an addition to your fashion library that is truly one-of-a-kind. RRP $317.99 ![]() Interest in contemporary cultural industries has grown in the past decade, as they take on a greater significance in our increasingly consumer-led society. Focusing on the world of fashion photography, this book presents an interdisciplinary approach in which this and other aesthetic markets, such as advertising, modelling, art, music and more, can be viewed. The main thrust of this groundbreaking book, is in developing a theory for these cultural markets, characterized by insecurity, and where status and aesthetic diversity generate order and price differentiation. In these industries, services and products are offered that are a mix of the aesthetic and the economic, and for fashion photographers such as those studied here, it is necessary to carefully position themselves in the market by developing unique photographic styles and separating themselves from competitors. Yet the markets in which these industries operate differ from the type of exchange markets depicted by neoclassical economists, and therefore cannot be considered using such modes of analysis. Instead Aspers conducts his study using empirical phenomenology, an original approach presented here for the first time, which can be easily used in other empirical studies. He draws on original empirical material; participant observation and interviews generated in New York and Stockholm; which bring a depth of analysis and a relevance to this book which academics, researchers and those with a vested interest in such industries will value. Written by one of the world's brightest young economic sociologists, this fascinating book (previously published in Sweden and enthusiastically received) is endorsed by recognized industry authorities. A noteworthy book, it provides a foothold in the burgeoning sub discipline of economic sociology, and a significant analysis of the economics of the fashion photography industry. RRP $244.99 ![]() Hand Drawing for Designers: A Visual Guide for Drawing Fundamentals approaches the act of drawing as a communication tool that students will carry forth in the design firm. It also addresses why hand drawing is valued within design firms for conceptual design, design development, and client presentations. The progression of methods and concepts builds from an introduction to drawing methods and drawing rationale through two-dimensional drawing techniques, three-dimensional drawing techniques, and presentation drawings. Designed to strengthen a student's understanding of visual representation and technical drawing by visually teaching, this text provides students with the skills to translate three-dimensional ideas into two-dimensional drawings that effectively communicate their design concept. Despite the increased reliance on digital media, hand drawing remains a powerful tool in conceptual design presentations because it emphasizes the large idea by leaving fine details to the client's imagination. Features: -- Progressive introduction of concepts (chapters build on previous chapters), step-by-step drawing instructions, and visual examples -- Presents the concept of entourage by exploring different hand and digital based techniques to add people, furniture and landscape elements to drawings, with an emphasis on the scale of the drawing and the quantity of entourage -- Includes techniques using printed SketchUp models as a tool to generate hand drawn and hand drafted perspectives -- Demonstrates how to digitally render hand drawings, sketches, and diagrams in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator -- CD-Rom provides digital example files in Photoshop, Illustrator and SketchUp format -- Instructor's Guide includes course outlines, additional assignments and how to use the text in a variety of courses Search
